Central Pacific Surf Trip 2023

 DATES: DECEMBER 2nd-8th, 2023

The Costa Rican Pacific Coast has so many beautiful beaches to explore and amazing surf breaks to check off your bucket list. We’re beyond excited to announce that our NEW Central Pacific Surf Trip will take place in December 2023 and we want you to come with us!

If you have already traveled in the Guanacaste area, surfed with us before and want to experience something new or it’s your first time surfing in Costa Rica and you’re looking for a local guide that will show you epic surf spots, this trip is for you! We invite all high intermediate and advanced surfers who want to explore different surf breaks, but still have an experienced surf guide to tell you where and when to surf and make sure you feel safe in the lineup. 

During this week we will have Playa Hermosa, Puntarenas as a base and each day go with the flow and surf where the wind and swell takes us. You can choose to fly into Liberia airport, get a warm up surf session at Playa Grande, Guanacaste and go on a road trip with us south or fly into San Jose airport and we’ll have a shuttle van picking you up to take you to Playa Hermosa, Puntarenas where we will all meet up for 5 days of amazing surf!

SURFING AND DAILY SCHEDULE

There are so many awesome surf spots near Jaco and Playa Hermosa! Depending on the size of the waves and direction of the swell we’ll go and look for the best surf for the day. After surfing we’ll have breakfast together and surf a second session or save our energy and surf for sunset. We may also do an extra long session depending on where we surf and enjoy a well deserved brunch afterward to recharge our batteries.

Here are a few of the options of surf breaks we have:  

Boca Barranca

Boca Barranca is located about 1h and 10 min north of Playa Hermosa. This is a long left point break and a perfect option if waves are very big.

Playa Hermosa

Playa Hermosa is known for its big powerful waves, but in the beginning of the dry season when the swells are smaller, this beach is a beauty. The best of all is that it’s such a long beach which makes it easy to find an uncrowded spot. It’s possible to surf just in front of our hotel or drive down the beach for a couple of minutes for more options.

Esterillos

15- 20 minutes south of Playa Hermosa, you’ll find Esterillos. This is one of the less developed surf rich areas in Costa Rica. Esterillos west, central and east offer several different breaks with peaks that work on different tides. A bit south of Esterillos Centro, you’ll find Bejuco with perfect barreling A-frames. 

Dominical

There are always waves in Dominical and for locals overhead waves are flat conditions and almost no one is out surfing. If waves are very small in the Jaco area, we’ll wake up early, drive 90 minutes south and take the whole morning to surf an uncrowded Dominical.

ACCOMODATIONS

Backyard beachfront hotel at Playa Hermosa will be our base for the week. The Backyard Beachfront Hotel features accommodation with a garden, pool and a private beach area.
The hotel will provide guests with air-conditioned rooms offering a desk, a coffee machine, a minibar, a safety deposit box, a flat-screen TV, a terrace and a private bathroom with a shower.

MEALS

On this trip we’ll take you to our favorite local restaurants. Breakfast/brunch is included in our surf package and the menu will change depending on where we go for the day. Backyard Hotel does not have its own restaurant, but there are plenty of great options next door for lunch and snacks. We’ll all go together for dinner to different restaurants in the Jaco and Playa Hermosa area.

TRANSPORTATION AND LOGISTICS

Option 1, Fly into Liberia airport
Travel option number 1 is to fly into Liberia airport on Saturday December 2nd. We will pick you up at the airport and take you to Playa Grande for a warmup sunset session followed by early dinner. We will wake up early the following morning, Sunday December 3rd, and start our road trip south towards Playa Hermosa/ Jaco. Depending on the wave size we’ll either surf Boca Barranca or continue the drive down to the Jaco area and get in the water late morning and check-in at our hotel after surfing. On the way back, we’ll surf in the morning, eat breakfast and drive towards Guanacaste. It’s possible to fly out from Liberia airport on Friday 8th if you have a late departure time.

* Hotel at Playa Grande on arrival day Saturday 2nd and departure day Friday 8th is not included in the price. We are happy to give you hotel recommendations. 

Option 2, Fly into San Jose airport

You can also choose to fly into San Jose airport on Saturday December 2nd or before noon on Sunday December 3rd. We will have a shuttle van picking you up and we’ll all meet up at Playa Hermosa for lunch and sunset surf. On our last day Friday December 8th, you’ll get picked up after breakfast and a shuttle van will take you back to San Jose airport.
